A few days earlier on the court at the Casper Events Center, Grace Trandahl embraced her teammates in a  joyous celebration as Wright won its fourth state championship in five years. It was a near perfect ending to a successful four years as a member of the Lady Panthers volleyball team.
Naturally, postseason awards weren’t much of a thought for Trandahl at the time. After all, a state title reigns supreme over nearly all other achievements, whether they be earned individually or as part of a collective.
But when she was notified of her individual season accolades, one especially stood out more than the others.
“It was pretty exciting when my coach told me,” Trandahl recalled. “It was something I definitely didn’t expect.”
Coaches reached a consensus and after a stellar senior season, selected Trandahl as the 2A Northeast Player of the Year.
Not only is she part of a unique group of state champions at Wright, her name now carries a certain weight with it.
“It’s quite the honor and something I’ve strived for,” Trandahl happily said. “This is definitely the cherry on top to our season.”
The honor as the top player in the conference may not have been one that Trandahl foresaw for herself. But it’s one that was never far from her periphery.
Dating back to 2011, a member of the Lady Panthers has been chosen as 2A Northeast Player of the Year six of the last seven years. Trandahl followed suit this year making it seven of the last eight.
“That has definitely been an inspiration for me,” Trandahl said about watching teammates earn the award during previous years.
Hayden Yeradi was chosen by coaches in 2011, Brittany Belt in 2012, Shauna Rasmussen in 2013, Chantal Lawrence in 2014, Kylee Tresch in 2015 and Heather Rubis in 2016.
During a season in which she was also named to the 2A All-State and All-Conference teams for the third year in a row, it’s only proper that Trandahl revels in her accolades with her teammates at her side. To her, they returned to the top of the podium as a team. So it’s only fitting that her lasting memories of this season include them.
“To win state as seniors is all any of us could ask for,” she said. “I’ve played with these senior girls since third grade and winning with them is for sure my favorite accomplishment.
“It really can’t get any better than that.”
Trandahl was named to this year’s 2A All-State team along with senior Kindall Seamands and junior Jozi Edwards. Like Trandahl, Seamands was named for the third year in a row. Edwards was named for the first time.
On the 2A Northeast All-Conference team, Trandahl and Seamands were also named for the third year in a row. They share the honor this year with Edwards and seniors Shelby Apodaca and Brandi Fuller.
