Over 450 of Wyoming’s best high school music students met in Casper on Jan. 20-22 for the 2019 Wyoming All-State Band, Orchestra and Choir Clinic. In order to be a part of such an amazing opportunity, two students, Maren Glasser and Vicky Van Vleet, had to go through a series of auditions where their clarinet playing skills were put to the test.
For the past seven years, Vicky Van Vleet, has dedicated a lot of her time to playing the clarinet.
“Playing the clarinet is not something that you can just take up on weekends and expect something to happen. You have to have dedication and practice, practice, practice,” Van Vleet said. “You have to really want it.”
Glasser echoes the same thoughts when it comes to playing the clarinet and hopes that it’s more than just a hobby in her future. Clarinet has been her passion for many years now.
“I want to make a career out of music. It’s more than just a hobby to me,” Glasser said. “All-State band takes a lot of practice and a lot of dedication. It’s not just something that you can pick up on the weekends and expect something wonderful to happen.”
For these high school girls, All-State Band was a showcase for their talent for the second year in a row. When they arrived in Casper they were met by Dr. John Locke of the University of North Carolina Greensboro, Thomas Taylor Dickey of Oklahoma State University and Dr. Andrea Ramsey a noted composer, conductor and educator.
Monday and Tuesday were full of practice with the honored conductors. Tuesday night they finally were able to showcase what they have been working so hard toward. Dr. John Locke was the honored conductor for the All-State Band.
“Both girls worked extremely hard to get themselves to this point in their musical careers,” band instructor Kimberly. Miller said. “I’m very proud of all the hard work and accomplishments they have achieved.”
